Several unique bird species like Black Hawks, weird vegetation including agave and cypress trees, and mammals like the ring-tailed cat are covered in this guide.
Phoenix to Flagstaff–This is probably the single best route to get a feel for the diversity of environments in Arizona. Interstate 17 climbs nearly a mile in elevation from the exotic Sonoran Desert around Phoenix to the Dense forests around Flagstaff. National Parks and monuments dot the route, and public lands are available for scenic side trips and free camping.
New Mexico to Flagstaff through the Petrified Forest–Geology enthusiasts will love this route which passes through the beautiful Painted Desert near Holbrook and then passes within sight of a potpourri of volcanic features (maar-diatreme, cinder cones, a lava dome, and one very large stratovolcano). Birders will find plenty to keep them busy in the Little Colorado River Valley near Winslow, and the kids will enjoy a quick stop to watch a prairie dog town up close.
