Have you ever wondered about the scenery you were blowing by at 65 miles per hour on the way to a natural wonder like the Grand Canyon? Looking for a place to throw down your tent and avoid the crowds? How about great birding spots or off the beaten path side trips?
A company called Roadside Nature has recently unveiled a unique new travel guide for independent travelers looking for something more than just a mad dash between the scenic hotspots. Authored by local Arizona naturalist JJ Smith, one of these recently released guides covers the surreal volcanic scenery between Flagstaff and the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The guide, available as an instant PDF download or Amazon Kindle book (and soon as an iPhone application) interprets the scenery, describing ecosystems along the drive from the top down. All the prominent plants and animals you are likely to encounter are described by mile post, so you follow along and learn about nature to make the miles fly by, or you can skip to the Nature Story section to read short entries about some of the more fascinating aspects of the environment.
What makes the guide even more unique is that it notes practically every side road along the route, including which roads are suitable for passenger cars and extend into national forest lands where free camping is available. Road conditions, weather, and even local advice on places to stay, eat, or fuel up are also included.
